BCxA Central Chapter: Tech Talk (leaky ducts)
Duct pressure or duct leakage testing is typically spec’d on most new construction and alteration projects but is it enough to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency of duct systems? The typical expectation of a mechanical system designer is that there will be leakage no greater than 10% of system capacity but actual field measurements performed by balancers indicate that, on most jobs, that number is more like 30% or 40%. Flow rates are difficult to achieve at diffusers or registers, requiring more fan power than anticipated during design. Kort Kugel, Global Sales Manager for Aeroseal, will review different methods for meeting ASHRAE and SMACNA seal classes in both new construction and existing buildings. He will also talk about ductwork as the forgotten piece of the HVAC system when it comes to energy efficiency and indoor air quality. And finally he will introduce the concept of aerosolized duct sealant as a way to tighten up new and existing ductwork.

Please join on April 8th for a 15-20 minute quick presentation of the forgotten component of an HVAC system…the duct work…. a leak in a pipe with a liquid is totally unacceptable obviously, but leakage in ductwork, we can live with that within reason….let’s learn why/how this could be improved.
