BCxA / BCCB Certification Update

The Building Commissioning Certification Board (BCCB) has now taken the game changing step of revising and submitting its Certified Commissioning Professional (CCP) certification policies, procedures, eligibility requirements, and testing mechanisms to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for international accreditation to the ISO 17024-2012 standard.

The CCP is viewed as the most rigorous and distinguished certification in the commissioning industry. Respected by the profession and recognized (often requested) by building owners and design teams, earning the CCP designation reflects a combination of achieved experience, knowledge, and skill in delivering building performance.

The new 2016 CCP Candidate Handbook published by the BCCB includes fresh content and sample questions, capturing revisions that respond to the US Department of Energy’s request for more quality and consistency in certain building-related professions. In 2014, DOE requested an industry investigation of five job titles in order to (1) achieve more uniformity in job knowledge, skills and abilities, and (2) improve building operational performance. The review resulted in new accreditation requirements, developed by building industry leaders, the National Institute of Building Sciences, and its Commercial Workforce Credentialing Council.

The resulting Better Building Workforce Guidelines include new professional criteria for “Building Commissioning Professionals.” A Job Task Analysis (JTA) and certification eligibility scheme were created and vetted by subject matter experts for use in developing certification or certificate programs guided by the CWCC’s team from the Building Commissioning Association (BCxA), the BCCB is setting a new benchmark that not only conforms to the new Guidelines, but also provides candidates with more and better support to prepare for achieving the CCP.

BCCB’s approval of accreditation is expected soon from ANSI. We will keep you informed.

Background: Twelve years ago, the Building Commissioning Association (BCxA) created BCCB as an independent third party organization to oversee the certification process based on then-current ISO 17024 rules, meeting the highest industry standards. Read more.
