Advocacy and Outreach: Present Yourself!

Advocacy by BCxA leaders is part of the Association’s mission and we are determined to get the word out.

In October, in addition to the annual Conference on Building Commissioning, President John D. Villani co-presented at ASHRAE Illinois Chapter and ASPE Chicago Product Show, and Sylvain Duprey presented at BOMA Montreal.

Ben Talbot and John Villani presented Monitoring Based Commissioning + Fault Detection & Diagnostics at ASHRAE’s Illinois Chapter meeting. It was a great event with a turnout of over 80 people. The questions got lively as the audience was eager to dig into the details and posed a great question on “what do you need to add to a design project to accommodate MBCx at the end of the project?” This question and the overwhelming interest in MBCx led the BCxA to add to our goals the development of an MBCx/OCx Best Practices Guide.

At the ASPE meeting in Chicago, Chris Sabarbaro and John Villani presented Commissioning, as related to Plumbing, Fire Protection, and Medical Gas Related Construction. While we often feel the Cx industry is well established and understood, having the opportunity to present to 30+ plumbing design engineers highlighted that we still have work to do — from questions about commissioning as it pertains to codes and certifications, to specifications and design review, to the development of a detailed ASHRAE 1.4 compliant systems manual. There were more than a few raised eyebrows when we commented that today’s plumbing systems have come into the age of the “Internet of Things!” Further explaining that today’s specialty plumbing systems like reverse osmosis, deionized water, Armstrong Brain® thermostatic mixing valve, even sump pumps, can and often are now all connected to the building automation systems and internet. The importance of commissioning on plumbing systems is here and now.

Sylvain Duprey presenting at BOMA Quebec

Sylvain Duprey, BCxA member and National Commissioning Manager of Brookfield Global Integrated Solutions (BGIS) in Canada, was selected to present Commissioning and its Benefits: Performance and Quality Process on behalf of BGIS and the BCxA at BOMA’s annual Montreal 2018 Integrated Technical Management Symposium in October. The event was held in the tower of the Montreal Olympic stadium, which, as Duprey put it, “for the longest time had no purpose other than to support the roof over the stadium.” Today, after being renovated, a foremost local bank occupies a major portion of the tower. Building owners/managers, technical people, contractors and suppliers were present at this event which also included a short tour of the stadium tower as well as a meet & greet event at the top of the tower.

If you are giving a presentation and need resources and materials; or if you are looking for an expert to present on aspects of the commissioning profession and practice, please contact the BCxA!
