2019 Commissioning Giants – Annual Survey

As a media partner with Consulting-Specifying Engineer (CSE), we’re pleased to see that the magazine’s Commissioning Giants Annual Survey includes a high percentage of BCxA members.

In fact, the Top 25 commissioning firms include 20 corporate and/or individual BCxA members, plus two of four firms in Tetra Tech’s High-Performance Buildings Group.

According to CSE survey results, responding firms’ commissioning revenue averaged approximately 30%, with some firms earning as much as 100% of their revenue solely from commissioning. Forty-four percent of companies earned $100,001 to $300,000, 32% earned $25,001 to $50,000 and 16% earned $50,001 to $100,000. Only 8% earned more than $300,000 per project.  See the summary of commissioning revenue, specialties and drivers after the Top 25 list in Table 1 below.

In addition to typical new and existing building commissioning, the following specialties were identified as commissioning services by survey respondents:

  • emergency power systems (8%)
  • monitoring-based (4%)
  • recommissioning (3%)
  • fire protection systems (3%)
  • building enclosure (3%)
  • communications systems (3%)

Drivers for respondents’ commissioning projects included:

  • Mandates (codes, standards, benchmarking: 92%)
  • Savings (energy efficiency, lower lifecycle cost: 88%
  • Sustainability (long-term materials and performance efficiency: 88%
  • Resiliency (80%), and
  • Marketability of the property (52%).
