Enablers and Barriers to EMIS: LBNL Survey 2019

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) conducted a survey of Smart Energy Analytics Campaign (SEAC) participants and supporters over the summer to “define next steps for future collaboration with building owners and industry.” Owners and supporting partners were asked what elements have been the most helpful enablers, barriers, and what they think is necessary to mainstream the installation and use of energy management and information systems (EMIS). Enablers and barriers include:

  • lack of staff time to review the EMIS dashboards and reports, and to investigate and implement findings
  • getting EMIS installed due to lack of existing metering, data quality problems, and challenges integrating data from disparate sources.

The LBNL team is investigating what it would take to codify EMIS for commercial buildings.
