CRE Activities Forecast 2020 Themes


The nonprofit Institute for Market Transformation (IMT) says that building portfolio owners and asset managers are taking action on climate change, and in 2019 the activities in the commercial real estate market expanded considerably. For example, according to statistics cited in an article by Chris Brown:

  • Investor action on climate change was higher in 2019 than in the past years.
  • 2019 Global Real Estate Sustainability Benchmark (GRESB) participation grew to more than 1,000 commercial property companies, real estate investment trusts (REITs), funds, and developers. GRESB results show that 90% of participating companies have a sustainability task force, and nearly 65% of them have Board members participating, underlining that investor demand for building performance is being addressed.
  • The CRE industry increased reporting of its ESG (environmental, social and governance) benchmarking data at the portfolio and the asset level.
  • Climate action plans and laws are targeting inefficient buildings for improvement, which “increases the potential for major changes in how real estate assets are insured, valued, and financed.”
  • Companies continue to adopt green leases and those that already use them are continuing to raise the bar.
