High Performance Buildings – Forecast for 2020 Building Technologies

A little “light” reading from High Performance Buildings magazine sheds light on daylighting, human-centric lighting, full spectrum lighting, tunable white lighting, and fenestration measures. Industry leaders also discuss BAS security, BIM efficiency, and ASHRAE’s Standard 135, BACnet SC (Data Communication Protocol for Building Automation and Control Networks Secure Connect) for securing the back-end of the building Internet of Things with BACnet Secure Connect. A total of 8 addenda were approved for Standard 135 in 2019.

According to the article, cybersecurity threats “are on an uptrend, and buildings are a target because they may have computers, people and intellectual property. The impetus to get a secure IoT platform in BACnet is driving the adoption of the standard. Manufacturers [have been] aggressively producing BACnet/SC products ahead of the standard’s release, which almost never happens.”
